Steven Spielberg’s presidential drama Lincoln is continuing its award-season sweep, leading the Academy Awards with nominations in 12 categories, including best picture.
Spielberg was nominated for best director, an award he’s taken home twice before. Spielberg won the Oscar for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.
Star Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for best actor, an award he’s also won twice before. The first was for his role as Christy Brown in My Left Foot and later as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.

Canada’s War Witch — known in Quebec as Rebelle — is up for best foreign film. It’s the third consecutive year a Quebec film has made it to the Oscars: Monsieur Lazhar was nominated in 2012, and Incendies was nominated in 2011. Neither film won.
Canadian Mychael Danna is up for two Oscars. “Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi, for which he wrote the music – Bombay Jayashri wrote the lyrics – is up for best song. He’s also nominated for best original score for Life of Pi.
As expected, Les Miserables was nominated for best picture, with Anne Hathaway nominated for best actress in a supporting role and Hugh Jackman for best actor.
Silver Linings Playbook picked up nominations in all four acting categories: Bradley Cooper (best actor), Jennifer Lawrence (best actress), Robert de Niro (best supporting actor) and Jacki Weaver (best supporting actress) are all up for awards.
The film is also up for best picture and David O’Russell is nominated for best director.
While Zero Dark Thirty was nominated for best picture, director Kathryn Bigelow is not up for best director.
With nine Oscar nominees for best picture and just five for best director not every director is nominated – but the exclusion of Bigelow, who won best director in 2009 for The Hurt Locker, is considered a snub.

Every man in the best supporting actor category has already won an Academy Award.
Jacki Weaver, 85, is the oldest-ever best supporting actress nominee, while Quvenzhané Wallis, nine, is the youngest best actor nominee.
Costume designer Eiko Ishioka was posthumously nominated for her work in Mirror Mirror.
Other Canadian connections
Life of Pi is based on a book by Canadian author Yann Martel.
Argo details the efforts of Canadian diplomat Ken Taylor, but Victor Garber, who plays Taylor, was not nominated.
